School Rebuilding Programme

What is the School Rebuilding Programme?

What the Funding is For:

The School Rebuilding Programme supports major rebuilding and refurbishment projects at schools and sixth-form colleges in England where buildings are in very poor condition. It is intended for cases where significant works are needed to address serious condition issues and provide safe, suitable buildings for pupils and staff. The programme prioritises buildings according to condition need.

Am I Eligible for Funding:

A school or sixth-form college may be suitable for nomination if it is:

  • A school or sixth-form college in England.

  • Put forward by its responsible body, rather than applying directly as an individual school.

  • A site with buildings in very poor condition.

  • A site where rebuilding or significant refurbishment is likely to be the only long-term or most cost-effective solution.

  • A site with extensive structural, building safety or severe condition issues.

  • A site where affected blocks are still required for curriculum delivery, unless they have already been forced out of use because of their condition.

When Should I Apply?

Schools are usually put forward through a nomination process led by their responsible body, rather than applying directly themselves. Nomination windows are set by the Department for Education, so timing depends on when a new round is announced. Responsible bodies should begin preparing as early as possible, as strong nominations rely on clear condition evidence, building information, photographs and a well-supported case for why rebuilding or major refurbishment is required.

School Rebuilding Programme nominations need to show that the affected buildings are in very poor condition and that rebuilding or significant refurbishment is the most appropriate long-term solution. The evidence should clearly demonstrate the scale, severity and impact of the condition issues across the site. We will review what evidence is available and advise on what else may be needed to support the nomination.

What Evidence Will I Need?

We will support the responsible body through the School Rebuilding Programme nomination process, helping to review whether the site meets the criteria for rebuilding or significant refurbishment need. We will help identify the affected blocks, assess the available evidence and prepare a clear case for why major rebuilding or refurbishment is required.

Where required, we can visit site, take photographs, review CDC or condition data, arrange additional professional surveys, and help collate the supporting information needed for the nomination. We can also support the responsible body with the information required for the online nomination portal.

What We Provide You With

Not Suitable for Your Project?

That’s okay, one of our other funding bid’s might be more suited to your project. Check them out below:

Condition Improvement
Fund

CIF provides annual capital funding to help eligible schools and sixth-form colleges address condition needs, improve building safety and keep facilities compliant and fit for purpose. It is commonly used for projects such as roofing, heating, safeguarding, compliance and essential building fabric works.

Salix

Salix funding supports public-sector organisations with decarbonisation projects, including low-carbon heating and energy-efficiency improvements that help reduce carbon emissions across their estate. It is particularly suited to projects replacing end-of-life fossil-fuel heating systems with more sustainable alternatives.

Urgent Capital
Support

Urgent Capital Support is for serious building condition issues that pose an immediate risk to health and safety or could result in the closure of all or part of a school. It is intended for urgent situations that cannot wait for the next suitable funding round.

Post-16 Capacity Fund

Post-16 Capacity Funding supports eligible education providers to create additional space for 16 to 19 learners where there is expected demographic growth and existing capacity is not sufficient. It can help fund new or improved teaching spaces, specialist facilities and wider estate changes needed to accommodate additional students.
